Ode to Asia - Hannah Grosshauser
My beloved Asia,
When the sun kisses my face
And I close my eyes,
I can almost feel you,
Almost hear your familiar sounds.
The fountain in Trafalgar Square,
Becomes your rivers and springs,
The red double-decker buses,
Become your flying coaches and rickshaws,
The lively rumble of tourists,
Becomes the sound of your market places,
The people of this country,
Become the people of yours.
The sun is magnified
To match the way it shines upon you.
If I imagine hard enough
You are there.
But when I open my eyes,
You’re gone,
And all that remains
Is a knot in my throat
And tears stinging my eyes.
If only I could have you back
Without my memories
Evaporating.
Yet still I know
Life goes on,
And I must arise
And embrace
What lies before me.
For the more I try to hold you,
The more you slip away,
And my soul is left
Grieving.
But I hope that one day,
We will meet again,
And not be alienated by
What we have both become.
